About this work
Sixteenth Stone 1980 by Lee Bontecou shows a dark central shape set into a lighter ground. The outer edge is drawn by hand, and the form feels pressed into the sheet. The image follows the cut and assembled forms that appear in the artist practice of mid twentieth century works on paper.
This object is a fine art print set in a frame, with a back panel. As a fine art print the paper holds the soft greys without shine, so the burned marks read as they were drawn. The frame and back panel carry the sheet flat.
Hang it on a stairwell wall where the light changes through the day. From the bottom step you notice the dark shape first, then the rough outline as you pass.
