About this work
Snow Basin, 1990- by Helen Frankenthaler places a pale band of colour across the page with open areas left clear. The eye moves along the edge of that band and rests in the unpainted space. Thin layers of paint lay side by side without building up.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame ends the picture with a clean line on the wall. That edge keeps the paint from blending into the surround. Against the pale ground the white finish reads as a quiet border.
In a kitchen above the sink you notice the thin washes first. From the table the colour shifts while the open space stays still. The same view from the doorway shows the band running straight across.
