About this work
Spiny Maquette 1939 shows a cluster of narrow triangular forms pointing outward from a central point. The shapes sit on a plain sheet with soft painted tones. Alexander Calder made these wire and metal studies before building the full sculpture. From across the room the points read as a single prickly outline.
The fine art print sits on a pale wall at shoulder height near a lamp that throws a soft light across the sheet. The light frame keeps the painted tones from sinking into shadow, so the triangular points stay clear.
On the landing wall by the stairs, you notice the sharp points first, then the quiet painted tones behind them. The print hangs beside a wooden newel post, and the frame grain meets the wood without matching it.
