About this work
Split Grilse - 1979 by Mary Pratt shows a fish split open on a surface. The scales read in cool grey and silver tones against a warmer ground.
The flat shape sits near the centre and the paint holds the form without much detail. Mary Pratt built her work from careful observation of domestic subjects. The fine art print uses matte paper so the silver stays muted and the lighter scale tones do not turn hard under a bulb.
A dark frame suits a pale wall in a kitchen. From the doorway you notice the broad silver band first, then the small marks along the edge. The split fish hangs above a sink where the light falls low on the paper.
