Surface Veil

Surface Veil - 1970 shows a flat painted area worked with repeated passes of white paint. The surface holds small changes in tone where the brush or roller moved across it. The picture sits within the minimal painting practice of Robert Ryman, where the material and the wall matter as much as the image.

The sheet comes as a fine art print ready to hang. A metal hanger is fitted to the back, so it goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed. The matte paper keeps the soft whites from shining under a lamp.

It fits a narrow stairwell wall above the bottom step. From the landing you see the broad painted field, and from the step below you notice the small shifts in tone across the surface.
