About this work
The Acrobatic Rectangle, Per Eleven - 1967 shows a grid of small coloured squares, each one filled with a different tone. The rows of numbers and paint run across the sheet in steps. Alfred Jensen built this from counted squares and painted colour blocks. The work keeps a steady rhythm from one square to the next.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface leaves the small colour shifts soft instead of shiny. The frame holds the printed sheet flat and the back panel keeps the whole thing square.
On a hallway wall at shoulder height the numbered squares read as a calm band of colour. From the landing you see the rows as a single step pattern, and from the mirror you notice the small changes in each square.
