About this work
The Bay, 1963- shows a thin wash of blue spreading over an open field of paper. A second colour sits behind it, softer and lighter, so the blue reads as a layer rather than a line. Helen Frankenthaler laid the paint into the paper and let it settle where it wanted.
This fine art print hangs on a pale wall at a mid height, where the blue wash stays visible but does not push forward. The matte paper keeps the grey undertone from shining under a lamp. A dark frame around it gives the open field a clear edge.
On a hallway wall at the turn, you see the big blue band first, then the softer ground beside it. The paint sits flat on the paper and the surface stays even from that distance.
