About this work
The End 1 1993 leans on Edward Ruscha habit of turning a single word into a painted mark. The letters stand in a band of solid tone against a plain field. A reader follows the shape of the word before the meaning arrives. This follows the same route Ruscha took with signs and scripts for many years.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame to buy.
In a kitchen hallway with a single bulb, the word reads plainly from the first step in. Up close, the steady edges of the lettering show the hand that laid them down. The wall beside the fridge stays clear around it.
