About this work
The Garden at Les Lauves shows trees and a garden path drawn in separate colour patches. Paul Cézanne builds the scene with slow strokes, each one laid over the next.
The ground reads as a few wide planes rather than fine detail. You see a garden in late nineteenth century practice.
The fine art print uses matte paper so the muted greens stay soft and there is no shine under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the painted patches in view. On the stairwell wall it sits low, and from the landing you read the tree trunks first before the smaller marks come into view.
