About this work
Three grey geometric units sit on a light ground inside the door frame of The Open Door - 1932. A plain door fills the centre, and the open space beside it holds the weight of the picture. Charles Sheeler painted measured planes and quiet edges. A thin shadow marks the threshold.
The frame is white, wood or dark wood, and the edge sits clean against the flat planes of the picture. You see the open door and the soft grey tones without a busy border. The fine art print keeps the clear geometry on the wall.
In a narrow hallway, the door shape reads from the landing, and the grey floors stay calm under foot. The white frame edge breaks the image cleanly at eye height near the coat hook.
