About this work
A painted schoolmaster figure stands against a plain painted ground in The Schoolmaster 1954. The figure is solid and outlined, placed a little to one side. The picture stays calm and still. Rene Magritte painted this in his usual surrealist painting practice, with flat colour areas and a clear outline around the shape.
The fine art print uses a matte paper, so the flat colour areas stay soft and the outline keeps its edge under a lamp. You can choose a light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
It fits on a study wall above a desk, where the desk lamp gives a steady pool of light. From the door you notice the solid figure first, then the plain ground around it.
