The Station of the Cross

The Station of the Cross - Twelfth Station shows a wide field of dark tone with one deep vertical band set into it. The band pulls the eye down the picture. Barnett Newman built this from colour field painting, using broad flat areas of tone.

This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the dark band flat and stops a gloss from sitting on the surface.

On a hallway wall the dark band reads plain against the paint. From the end of the corridor you see the field first, then the vertical shape.
