About this work
The Stormy Sea 1958 by Alma Woodsey Thomas shows a field of short colour strokes building a rough water surface. The colours shift from pale blue to deeper grey blue in loose bands. The marks stay small and regular, so the sea reads as moving but never turns into waves you can count.
This fine art print uses matte paper, which lets the soft blues stay flat and keeps the strokes from shining under a lamp. A light frame on a pale wall or a dark frame on a dark wall helps the colour bands sit without pulling the eye away.
It fits a hallway wall with a small amount of daylight. From the hall you see the broad bands of blue and grey, and from the landing you notice the individual strokes.
