About this work
The Violin 1916 places a stringed instrument inside a tight arrangement of angled planes. Juan Gris breaks the form into overlapping sections, so the body and neck shift across the surface. A few lines hold the parts together while the blocks stay separate. The shape reads as both an object and a structure of parts.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame sets a clean edge around the image. That border keeps the painted planes from drifting off the side. The wood frame adds a soft outline that separates the picture from the paint behind it.
It works above a desk in a study. You notice the cut edges of the instrument first, then the small shifts in tone between the sections. The line of the bow stays clear at the side of the room.
