About this work
Third Stone 1963 by Lee Bontecou shows a central dark shape set into a lighter ground. A few rough pencil lines cross the outer field. The burnished marks around the opening give the image its weight.
This fine art print uses a matte paper that holds the soft greys without shine. The frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall, so the dark centre stays separate from the lighter ground.
On a kitchen wall near the sink the opening reads from the table. Hanging by the pantry door the pencil lines show when you pass through. The dark shape sits flat against the light ground.
