About this work
To Give Painless Light 1955 by Roberto Matta opens on a field of layered strokes and drifting shapes. The marks move across the surface like a search through painted space. Roberto Matta worked in a surrealist painting practice that built space from drifting forms and soft edges.
The fine art print sits inside a frame with a white finish. The white edge keeps the picture clear and gives the image a steady line against the paper. The matte surface holds the greys and blues without shine, so the soft strokes stay readable under a lamp.
In a bedroom with a low window, the image sits on the side wall near the bed. From the doorway you see the broad strokes first. Closer in, the smaller marks and the pale edges of the forms come into view.
