About this work
Townscape 1969 2 by Gerhard Richter shows a view of buildings broken into loose bands of grey and blue. Across the room the shapes read as a flat urban scene.
Up close the painted edges come into view and the picture loses its hard outline. The soft blurring comes from Richter practice with a squeegee on a photograph based image. The fine art frame in white gives the printed sheet a clean border on the wall.
That white edge keeps the grey bands from spilling into the plaster. Set it on a kitchen wall above the counter where morning light hits the paper. You see the blurred blocks from the doorway first, then the thin scraped lines when you lean in.
