About this work
Transection #3, After Fra Angelico - 1967 uses flat colour blocks and clear outlines in a mid century abstract style. The image builds from stacked forms that read like a quiet arrangement of shapes on a plain ground. Clarence Holbrook Carter painted such works with a measured hand and a steady tone.
This fine art print hangs on a pale wall at shoulder height, where the soft colour areas stay separate and the outlines do not blur. A light frame keeps the image open on that wall and lets the flat tones sit without much contrast.
In a hallway near a coat rack, you notice the stacked forms first from a short distance, then the small gaps between them as you pass. The light from overhead keeps the colours even.
