About this work
Trois Pics Intermediate Maquette 1967 by Alexander Calder shows a group of painted forms set on a plain sheet. The painted shapes stand apart and seem to tilt in open space. You can read the whole layout from the doorway, and the small painted strokes show up when you stand close.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The frame and panel keep the sheet flat and protect the painted lines and the pale ground. Light hitting the surface does not glare, so the painted colours stay soft and the shapes read clearly.
It hangs well on a hall wall near the stairs. From the landing you see the separate painted forms spread across the sheet, and from the bench you notice the small painted strokes around each form.
