About this work
Untitled - 1929 uses soft bands of paint laid across the sheet. The marks blur where the tones meet, a method Mark Rothko often used when he worked with thin washes and broad edges. You see broad areas of tone rather than a clear subject.
The piece is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. With the ready to hang option it arrives assembled, so the flat areas of tone stay matte and there is no shine under a lamp.
It suits a hallway wall at the end of a short corridor. You walk past and notice the broad painted shapes, then stop to read the faint blur where one band meets the next.
