About this work
Untitled - 1955 by Karl Benjamin uses flat colour planes set against one another. Strong bands of red and blue press into a worked ground, and the hard edges hold each colour apart. The eye moves from one block to the next without slipping.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger on the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. You place the picture on the wall and step back to check the balance between the colour bands.
In a hallway with a single bulb above, the red band catches the light first and the blue stays steady behind it. From the stair landing you see the hard divisions clearly, and the small scratches in the ground show when you pass by.
