About this work
Untitled 1964 turns to flat colour blocks and bold black outlines. A warm tone fills most of the surface, with a darker shape sitting against it. The layering of solid fills gives the image a steady look. The artist Taro Yamamoto worked in this graphic way during his later years.
This fine art print hangs on a pale wall at shoulder height, where the soft light keeps the dark outlines clear. A dark frame on that pale surface ties the heavy outline to the room. The matte finish keeps the colours from shining under a lamp.
In a hallway with one bare bulb, the solid fills read as clear blocks from the bend in the corridor. From the kitchen doorway the darker shape picks up the warm tone on the table. The print stays quiet on that wall.
