Un horizon divise la toile en deux. Le tableau *Untitled #3* d'Edward Corbett, datant de 1950, part de là, avec une géométrie qui refuse de se ranger dans la catégorie du paysage ou de l'abstraction.
Des taches de fusain s'étirent vers le haut dans un champ gris ardoise, tandis que le registre inférieur présente une bande discrète de terre d'ombre naturelle. Aucun coup de pinceau n'est répété ; chaque passage du couteau laisse une crête de pigment qui capte la lumière différemment. La séparation n'est pas nette — l'ocre s'infiltre dans le gris comme une brume montante.
