About this work
Untitled Black Painting - 1950 by Edward Corbett shows a flat dark field with little shifts in tone across the surface. The work comes from a period when painters were testing picture space with plain colour and steady edges. You can see small changes in the black where the surface catches the light in one spot.
The frame is black and gives the black image a clear edge on the wall. The dark finish keeps the picture grounded and stops the surface from spreading past the edge. This fine art print keeps the plain surface calm on the paper.
Hang it on the stairwell wall where the light comes from above. From the bottom step you see the dark field hold still and the black frame sits close to the edge.
