Untitled Lembark I92 shows open colour washes spread across a white field. The painted marks stay apart from each other. Sam Francis works with thin layers of paint that leave gaps of white between the colour. The image keeps a loose feel, with the paint resting on the surface rather than covering it.

The fine art frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The white finish sits close to the white ground in the painting, so the edge does not pull the eye away from the colour. You see the painted areas first and the frame second.

It works on a stairwell wall where the steps break the view. From the landing you catch the broad washes first, then the small gaps of white between them as you walk past.
