Untitled, Rome opens on a sheet where rough handwritten lines and painted marks move without a fixed shape. The work sits inside the wider body of Cy Twombly, where writing and drawing blend into a single gesture.

The fine art frame finishes in white, wood, dark wood or black, and that edge gives the picture a clear line against the wall. For this image the white frame keeps the painted ground open, while a dark wood frame sets the handwriting marks apart from the space around them.

Above a long desk the work reads from across the room as a set of moving lines, and up close you notice the small breaks in the pencil strokes. From a door you catch the broad shape of the sheet, and standing nearer you follow the handwritten marks as they drift and stop.
