About this work
Viewpoint I, 1974- shows a single broad mark laid over a thin field of paint. The edge of the shape feels open, as if the brush moved once and left the paper with it. Helen Frankenthaler worked with thin washes that spread into the sheet and leave soft boundaries.
The mark stays plain against the ground, with no second layer to sharpen it. A light frame on a dark wall lets the mark read clearly from across the room. The paper stays matte, so the tone of the wash does not change under a lamp.
You see the open edge first, then the flat colour behind it. This fine art print keeps that simple setup on a wall above a desk. It reads well from a chair and keeps the mark readable from a doorway.
