A pale rectangle floats above a blush field. White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose) is the name Rothko gave this luminous rectangle of color in 1950.
The top band is a creamy white, not quite opaque, letting the yellow beneath glow through. Below, a soft pink rectangle rests on a lavender base, which in turn sits on a rose-colored ground. Edges are never sharp; each layer bleeds into the next, as if lit from behind.
Hang it where afternoon light can pass through the paper, turning the colors into a quiet lamp for the living room wall.
