White Gothic No. 5 - 1961 shows broad shapes balanced on a pale field. The paint is loose in places and tight in others. Richard Pousette-Dart works with an abstract expressionist painting method that lets the marks stay open. The eye moves from one shape to the next without a fixed path. The shapes seem to hold a quiet space.

This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte face keeps the pale tones even when a lamp is on. The frame gives the picture a firm outer edge. It arrives assembled when the ready to hang option is used.

It works on a plaster wall in a bedroom corner. From the doorway the pale field reads first, then the shapes step forward as you move closer. The room stays calm around it.
