About this work
White Painting Four Panel 1951 holds four tall white fields laid side by side. The surface stays even, with only a faint shift where one panel meets the next. Robert Rauschenberg left the paint thin so the paper shows through in places. The brush moves in long flat passes, then stops.
The print comes as a fine art piece with a metal hanger fitted to the back. It goes straight onto a nail or screw, so the four panels sit level without a separate frame. The paper is matte, which keeps the white fields soft when a lamp is on.
On a study room wall above a desk, the four panels break the wall into four quiet blocks. From the doorway you see the pale rectangles, and the pencil lines near the top edge only show when you stand nearer.
