About this work
Zing 1 1971 sets out a row of narrow black bands on a pale ground. The bands step across the sheet in a steady rhythm. The picture belongs to the optical art practice Bridget Riley developed across her career. The marks read as parallel bands that shift the eye along the surface.
The fine art frame can follow the room you choose. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the pale ground open. A dark frame on a pale wall makes the black bands sit forward.
It works on a stairwell wall where the light falls from above. From the bottom step you see the bands line up in a long row. Up close the edges of each band catch the room light. The picture holds its shape when you walk past it.
