Composition — Fine Art

Black and white marks spread across the sheet in Composition - 1947. Wols lays down thin lines and small blotches in grey, black and off white. The grey tones sit beside the dark marks so the lighter parts stay soft. A white frame gives the edges a clear line on the wall.

The print uses fine art paper with a matte face, so the light greys stay dull and there is no shine under a lamp. A white or black frame finish can sit against those soft tones without pulling the eye.

It hangs on a bedroom wall over the bed. From the side of the room you notice the dark marks first, then the pale grey ground. The light grey lines stay quiet against the white frame.
