Indigo

Indigo by Al Held shows a deep blue field with hard straight edges. The blue sits over a lighter ground, and the edge between them is sharp and clean. The paint is laid down in a flat layer with no visible brush strokes.

This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The frame gives the image a fixed edge, and the back panel keeps the print flat against the wall. The surface of the print stays even so the blue does not shine under a lamp.

It hangs on a blank wall above a desk where you sit facing it. From that distance the blue band reads as one wide shape, and the hard edge between tones stays clear. The wall behind it is plain so nothing pulls the eye away from the colour.
