Two-Four

Two-Four - 1983 opens with a square field divided into two broad areas. One side holds a warm ochre band, the other a cool grey wash. The edge between them is uneven, not a straight line. Doug Ohlson built these colour fields with broad acrylic strokes.

This fine art print is ready to hang on arrival. The frame finish can follow the room. A light frame on a dark wall lets the ochre band read clearly. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the grey wash from fading into the background.

In a hallway landing, you see the two colour bands first, then the soft edge between them. Under a low ceiling light the ochre warms up and the grey stays calm. From the stairwell you notice the empty corner before you read the whole field.
